A man held in the jail at Purvis, Mississippi, was taken from it at daylight on December 27, 1884, according to the St. Landry Democrat, which reports that a crowd took him from the jail and killed him. A Narragansett Herald item printed January 3, 1885, says about fifty railroad employees took three men from a jail near Purvis and hanged them to trees, after a passenger train was derailed on the Queen and Crescent tracks. The St. Landry account says he had confessed and cleared his son, and his name is not given in either paper. Whether the jailers resisted, gave up the keys or handed him over is not stated.
