A Black man, whose name is not recorded, was reportedly taken from the sheriff at Orangedale, Florida, by a group of men, according to a brief item in The Gazette published June 12, 1897. The paper says he was believed to have been killed. The item gives no name, age or exact date of death, and does not name the jail where he was held or say how the sheriff responded.
