A Black man held in the Greenwood jail was taken from the jail in the daytime and beaten to death near Dyson, South Carolina. Sheriff McMillan of Greenwood County said he was away and the jailer and a deputy were sick when the man was taken, and he arrested four men, including Henry Williamson, whom the sheriff described as a ringleader. An earlier coroner's jury recorded heart failure as the cause of death, and the governor's office is investigating that finding. A witness says he was intimidated into swearing falsely at the inquest.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). Sheriff McMillan says he was away and the jailer and deputy were sick when a mob took the man from the jail, while a governor's office investigation is contesting an earlier coroner's jury verdict of heart failure and a juror attributes the death to whipping.
Reported by: Governor's office investigation (outside investigators); Sheriff McMillan of Greenwood (the agency that held him); Coroner's inquest jury (medical examiner or coroner); A juror (court).
