Former companions from the army in the mountain region where he had lived came to see him at the jail before he was taken out. The Wilmington Journal reported in May 1868 that he spent his last night in the jail, prayed with spiritual advisers, and was baptized by a Methodist clergyman that morning. He was then taken from the jail to a pine gallows set up near the railroad depot, before large crowds, and executed there.
