A young man held at the state Penitentiary in Raleigh died there on September 12, 1876, according to The Charlotte Democrat. His elderly father travelled from Person County with a petition signed by many local residents asking the Governor for a pardon, hoping to bring his son home to his mother, who was described as almost heartbroken. The father learned on arrival that his son had already died. Many of the best people in Person County had signed the petition, and the local community sympathized with the family.
