died 2024 · John E. Goode Pretrial Detention Facility, Duval County, Florida

A.L. was a man held in the Duval County jail in Florida in 2024 while he waited for the Florida Department of Children and Families to transfer him to a state hospital for mental health treatment. The transfer was about four weeks past its statutory deadline, and clinicians at a Jacksonville hospital had warned that he was at risk of harming himself. About six weeks later he died of hyponatremic dehydration. Disability Rights Florida and the Southern Poverty Law Center attribute his death to the department's delays in a lawsuit against it.
