On February 18, 1875, a masked mob took five men from the Mason County jail in Texas and lynched three of them. The men had been in the jail's custody when the mob broke in. Sheriff John Clark said he could not identify any member of the mob. A Texas Ranger who was passing through intervened and saved two of the five.
