A man, 21, died on August 14, 2023, at St. Clair County Jail, in the custody of the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office. The death was reported to the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority, which does not publish the names of the people who died. The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office reported the manner of death as suicide. Its report says: “The deceased was found unresponsive in cell with bed sheet wrapped around neck. Suicide by hanging confirmed by autopsy/Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy.”
