A mob stormed the Kemper County jail and killed people held there, according to an interview printed in The Comet in September 1879, which also said children were among the dead. The interviewee said no one dared to interfere with the crowd. The account gives no names, ages or exact date for the victims, and it does not say whether the jailer resisted or gave up the keys.
