Died in jail or a lockup
Name not reported
A Black man held in a Mississippi jail was taken from his cell by a mob and hanged from a telegraph pole, according to a short 1898 item in the Oxford Eagle. The newspaper copy is too garbled to give his name, the town, the exact date, or whether the jailer resisted or handed him over. His name and any account from his family are not available in this source.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
Reported by: Oxford Eagle (reporters).
