A person held in the Russell County jail in Virginia was taken from the jail by a mob a few nights before February 8, 1883, when The Brookhaven Ledger reported the killing. The mob lynched them. The person's name, age and sex were not published, so they are referred to here with they/them pronouns. Whether the jailer resisted the mob or handed the person over is not stated.
