Died in jail or a lockup
Name not reported
In September 1889, the Russellville Democrat reported that three men were taken from the Burke County jail in Morganton, North Carolina, by a mob and lynched. The Oxford Eagle described a mob of about one hundred men who broke open the jail and hanged a Black man whose name is garbled in the surviving text. Neither account gives the men's names in a readable form. Neither says whether the jail's officers resisted the mob, gave up the keys, or handed the men over.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
Reported by: Russellville Democrat (reporters).
