A 30-year-old woman died on Monday, August 31, 2020, after she was shot in the back seat of a Spotsylvania County Sheriff's vehicle. Deputies were transporting her from the Mary Washington Hospital Crisis Assessment Center to Western State Hospital for evaluation when the shot was fired, and she died at the scene. Virginia State Police said the gunshot was self-inflicted and that no deputy fired a weapon. State Police are investigating the death, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will also examine it.
