According to The Times, a Black man held in the Miller County jail near Arlington, Georgia, was taken from the jail early on May 21, 1894, by an armed band of about seventy-five men. The Times reports that they took him to an oak tree in the public square, hanged him, and fired hundreds of shots into his body. A Fort Worth Gazette dispatch published May 23, 1894, describes his death differently, saying he was riddled with bullets. The two press accounts disagree on how he was killed.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. Press accounts say a mob took him from the Miller County jail and killed him by hanging and shooting, and they do not say whether the jailer resisted or handed him over.
