An unnamed Black person was in the custody of officers being taken to jail in Georgia when a mob seized them and lynched them, according to a brief wire dispatch datelined Augusta. The dispatch was reprinted in the Memphis Daily Appeal on December 23, 1882, and dates the death to December 22, 1882. The officers were holding the person when the mob took them from their custody.
