A Black man held in the Taliaferro County jail in Crawfordville, Georgia, was taken from his cell by a mob in March 1918 and killed. Governor Hugh M. Dorsey had granted him a 30-day respite so his lawyer could petition for commutation, and the mob acted after that respite was granted. Governor Dorsey offered a $500 reward for the arrest and conviction of any member of the mob. He said he had no authority to call the sheriff to account.
