A Black man held before trial in the jail at Roylston, Georgia, was taken from the jail by a mob on the day before he was to be tried, and was killed. According to an Atlanta Constitution editorial reprinted in the Savannah Tribune, officers offered no apparent resistance to the mob, and the paper said the killing made the state look lawless. Earlier, a mob had tried to seize him, but a judge persuaded it to disperse, and state militia moved him to Atlanta before he was returned for trial.
