Died in jail or a lockup
Name not reported
In 1942, according to a national count of lynchings compiled by the Department of Records and Research at Tuskegee, a Black person was taken from a jail and hanged by a mob. The count is the only source, and it gives no name, age, sex or location for the person, and does not name the jail. It also does not say whether the jailer or sheriff resisted the mob, gave up the keys, or handed the person over. The same count lists five lynchings that year, all of Black people, and this death is one of them.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
