A 16-year-old boy from Anderson County died on July 13, 2014, after staff at a Department of Juvenile Justice detention center in Richland County found him hanging in his cell. He was taken to Lexington Medical Center and died there shortly afterward. Richland County Coroner Gary Watts ruled the death a suicide. DJJ said it opened an internal investigation, referred the matter to the State Law Enforcement Division, and suspended three employees while it is reviewed.
