A man held at the Elbert County Detention Center in Elberton, Georgia, died on June 11, 2026. The Elbert County Sheriff's Office said he had been placed on medical watch in a holding cell, and that a cell check found him unresponsive and not breathing. The sheriff's office attributed his death to a medical emergency, and said detention officers called 911 and used an automated external defibrillator until EMS arrived. He was taken to Elbert Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, and the GBI was asked to lead the investigation, which is pending.
