A Black man whose name the 1881 Eaton Democrat gives as Taylor was held in the jail at Greensboro, North Carolina. On the night of June 11, 1881, about 200 people came to the jail for him, and when the jailer refused to hand over the keys, they tore down the fence, broke open the jail doors and overpowered the guard. The crowd took the keys, unlocked his shackles, drove him away in a buggy and hanged him about seven miles south of Reidsville in Rockingham County. The name is garbled in the printed text, so it may not be exact.
