Died in jail or a lockup
Name not reported
In March 1878, a Black person held in the Clarksville jail in Tennessee was taken from the jail at night by a mob and killed. The Eaton Democrat reported in April 1878 that Black residents strongly disapproved of the lynching. The paper said the mob was supposed to have come from the district where the young woman involved lived, and that the lynching came about a month before a fire destroyed much of the town's business district.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
