Governor Throckmorton of Texas said in a protest printed in the Daily Ohio Statesman in September 1867 that two citizens were arrested by a company of soldiers and killed less than an hour later. He said they were killed by a man who had pointed them out. The governor also said an officer was indicted as an accessory to the killings but was not handed over for trial.
