The Morristown Gazette reported in October 1874 that four Black people were taken from a Tennessee jail and shot dead. The paper said a state attorney general's report, quoted from the Union and American, had claimed sixteen people were hanged after being taken from the jail, and called that account false. According to the paper, two others were wounded and ten escaped unhurt.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). The Morristown Gazette says four Black prisoners were taken from a Tennessee jail and shot dead, disputing Attorney General Murray's report that sixteen were hanged.
