According to the Morristown Gazette, four Black people were taken from a Tennessee jail and shot dead. The Gazette, writing on October 21, 1874, disputed a state attorney general's report, quoted in the Union and American, which had said sixteen people were hanged after being taken from jail. The paper said that figure was false, and that two others were wounded and ten escaped unhurt.
