In October 1874 The Morristown Gazette reported that four Black prisoners were taken from a Tennessee jail and shot dead. The paper disputed a state attorney general's report, quoted in the Union and American, that sixteen prisoners had been hanged after being taken from jail, saying that account was false and that two others were wounded and ten escaped unhurt. The article gives no names for the four dead and does not say who fired.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). The Morristown Gazette disputes Attorney General Murray's report, saying four Black prisoners were taken from a Tennessee jail and shot dead rather than sixteen being hanged.

Reported by: The Morristown Gazette (reporters).
