A Black man held in a Tennessee jail was taken from it by a mob and burned to death, according to a Nashville American editorial reprinted in the Columbia Herald in August 1901. The editorial says the officers of the law were overpowered despite appeals and protests from citizens and the Attorney General, who had promised him a speedy trial. The mob's killing of him is described as a failure of the officers who held him and of the state that had promised him a trial.
