Died in jail or a lockup
Name not reported
An unnamed young man held in the Tupelo, Mississippi jail was taken by a mob early on the morning of April 3, 1896, and lynched in front of the courthouse, according to a Kansas City Daily Journal report published the next day. The account says the mob overpowered the officers guarding him. Because that passage is garbled in the scan, it is unclear how much resistance the guards offered or whether they handed him over.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
