A Black man held in the Springfield, Ohio jail was taken from his cell by a mob and killed. The Sedalia Weekly Conservator, in a March 1904 editorial, said Sheriff Routihan did not protect him and that no shot was fired in his defense. The same editorial holds the sheriff chiefly responsible for the wider race violence that burned part of the city.
