A man died in January 2024 while held at the Vernon County Jail in Missouri. Chief Deputy Travis Cole of the Vernon County Sheriff's Office told KOAM that the death appeared to be caused by an overdose, and that two other people held there appeared to have overdosed but recovered. The Missouri State Highway Patrol investigated the death. A former person held at the jail has since been charged in connection with it.
