Died in jail or a lockup

A person held at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail in James City County, Virginia, died on October 11, 2020. Jail spokeswoman Sara Mahayni said the person was found unresponsive in their cell early that Sunday and taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Mahayni said the person had arrived at the jail the previous Friday. The cause of death was awaiting preliminary autopsy results, and the state Department of Corrections was set to review the death.
