A man held in a city jail in July 1891 was taken from his cell by a crowd of masked men, according to an unsigned account in The Sun. The men held a pistol to the jailer's head and took the keys, then gagged the man, took him to a bridge over a canal, shot him several times in the head and hanged him. A placard left on the bridge warned that this was the fate of would-be murderers.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
