Four Black people held in the Franklin County jail in Mississippi were taken from the jail by a mob of about forty men on the night of Saturday, September 20, 1884, according to a dispatch from Brookhaven reprinted in several newspapers. The dispatch says the mob overpowered the jailer to get in and hanged the four from trees in the courthouse yard. The dispatch reports that the mob warned it would return and clear the jail unless the circuit judge disposed of the other cases held there that term. The dispatch says a large majority of county citizens deplored the killings.
