A mob of about sixty masked men broke into the Anne Arundel County jail at Annapolis, Maryland, and took a Black man from his cell, according to a New York World account reprinted in the New-York Tribune in December 1906. The paper says the warden surrendered his keys without resistance, and that the man was hanged and shot. The account says police did not intervene. Editorials from several other papers criticized the jail officers for not resisting and called for officials to be held to account.
