A man whose name is illegible in the surviving 1879 newspaper text was hanged by the state in a public execution in early June 1879, before a crowd of about a thousand people. According to The Sun, he addressed the crowd before the drop. The paper reports that the cap was adjusted, the trap was sprung, and he was pronounced dead within a few minutes.
