A Black man held in the Owensboro jail in Kentucky was taken out by a mob on the night of January 27, 1869, according to the Louisville Journal-Courier, which reported that fifteen or twenty armed, disguised men came to the home of jailer Joseph Mitchell around ten or eleven at night. Mitchell gave up the keys rather than resist, and the men, unable to break the chains fastening the prisoner to the floor, dragged him out and hanged him from a locust tree in the courthouse yard. The newspaper said the body was still hanging when its informant left Owensboro the next day. The man's name is not recorded in this account.
