Died in jail or a lockup

Name not reported

A man held in a town jail in 1873 was taken from it by a mob, according to a newspaper account published in The Sun on July 3 of that year. The account, preserved as damaged OCR text, does not reliably give his name, the county or the exact date, so his identity cannot be recovered from it. It describes him being carried about half a mile from town and killed. The article does not make clear whether the jailer or sheriff resisted the mob or handed him over.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched

Reported by: The Sun (1873 newspaper account) (reporters).
