A Black man was being held in the jail at Madison, Georgia, in September 1871. On a Tuesday morning in late September, a large group of men entered the town, forced open the jail and fired guns before leaving. According to the New-York Tribune, the men took him from the jail and killed him, though the surviving newspaper text is partly garbled and does not give his name. Whether the sheriff or jailer resisted, gave up the keys or handed him over is not stated in the account.
