A 41-year-old Congolese woman died in Customs and Border Protection custody on Christmas Day 2019, one day after she entered the United States with her husband and their two children while seeking asylum. The American Immigration Council reports that she died of acute kidney failure. According to the Council, her paperwork recorded previous medical conditions, yet CBP medical personnel still placed her in detention.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (neglect alleged). Reported as acute kidney failure, but the account says her documented prior medical conditions did not stop CBP medical personnel from placing her in detention.
