Died in jail or a lockup
Name not reported
A man held in a Tennessee jail in May 1870 was taken from the jail by a mob and hanged the same night, according to a Raftsman's Journal item published May 18, 1870. The item gives no name, no county or town, and no account from officials about whether the jailer or sheriff resisted or handed over the keys. The only claim is the newspaper's own report that citizens forced the jail and hanged him.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
Reported by: Raftsman'S Journal (reporters).
