21 years old · died May 13, 2017 · Delnor Hospital, Kane County, Illinois

Tywon Salters, 21, of Chicago, was in the custody of the Kane County Jail and was being treated at Delnor Hospital in Geneva, Illinois, when he died on May 13, 2017. Officials said he took a correctional officer's handgun and held two nurses for about three hours. The Kane County Sheriff's Office said that after negotiations failed, SWAT officers entered his hospital room around 4 p.m. and he was shot in the head, and the Illinois State Police are investigating whether the use of force was justified. A lawsuit filed by the two nurses alleges that the officers guarding him failed to keep him secured and left him without restraints, and accounts differ on who fired the shot.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff (disputed; neglect alleged). The sheriff's office says SWAT officers shot him after failed negotiations, while the nurses' lawsuit says his guard left him without restraints and that the guarding officers failed to keep him secured, and accounts differ on who fired the shot.
