Tyler Tabor
Tyler Tabor was a 25-year-old welder and the father of a young son, whom family members remember as friendly, outdoorsy and loving. He was struggling with addiction when he was held at the Adams County jail in Colorado, and he died there in May 2015, three days after arriving. A coroner's report listed dehydration as the cause of death and ruled it natural, and it cited drug withdrawal as the alleged cause. His family's federal lawsuit says he told nurses he was addicted to opiates, begged for an IV that was not given, and was found on his cell floor in distress, and that staff did not respond with urgent care before he died. The county and Corizon Health dispute the lawsuit's allegations, and the family later settled with Corizon for $3.7 million.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (disputed; neglect alleged). The county coroner ruled the death natural from dehydration, while his family's lawsuit says jail staff and Corizon Health nurses ignored his withdrawal symptoms and refused the IV he begged for, and the companies dispute those allegations.
Reported by: county coroner's office (medical examiner or coroner); Adams County Detention Facility (the agency that held him); his family and their attorneys, in a federal lawsuit (family or their lawyers).
Lawsuit: His family sued Adams County and Corizon Health over his death at the Adams County jail, and the family settled with Corizon for $3.7 million.
