Died in custody

Tuarus McNair

27 years old · died June 2014 · Treasure Coast Forensic Treatment Center, Florida

Tuarus McNair, 27, was held at the Treasure Coast Forensic Treatment Center in Florida in June 2014. According to the reports, another man held there punched him repeatedly in the head while the two sat at a lunch table, and he was found dead in his cell about eight hours later. An employee who was supposed to check on him every half hour had not done so for about an hour because he was on break, and a state risk manager cited verified neglect and inadequate supervision. Chief Medical Examiner Roger Mittleman ruled the death an accident caused by a short-circuited heart. Mittleman's ruling and the risk manager's finding are the competing accounts of how he died.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (disputed; neglect alleged). Chief Medical Examiner Roger Mittleman ruled the death an accident from a short-circuited heart, but a state risk manager cited verified neglect and inadequate supervision, and an employee skipped the required half-hour checks for about an hour while on break after a fellow patient repeatedly punched him in the head.

Reported by: Chief Medical Examiner Roger Mittleman (medical examiner or coroner).
