Trinidad Charlie

died June 16, 1882 · Rico jail, Dolores County, Colorado

Trinidad Charlie was held in the jail at Rico, Colorado, in June 1882, when a mob took him from the building in the early morning of June 16, according to a Denver dispatch reprinted in the Wood River Times. That dispatch says he was shackled to another man, showed marks of a severe struggle, and was hanged in a small cabin across from the jail. A Portland Daily Press telegram and a Las Vegas Daily Gazette report also describe a group taking him from the jail and hanging him, though they give the place as Rice in one case. None of the accounts say who was in the group or whether the jailer or sheriff resisted, gave up keys, or handed him over.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A Republican special dispatch published in a Denver newspaper says a party entered the Rico jail in the early morning, took Trinidad Charlie and hanged him in a cabin across from the jail.
