Tracy Sims

died 2019 · Greenwood County Detention Center, Greenwood County

Tracy Sims was taken to the Greenwood County Detention Center in 2019, where she was not seen by a nurse until later that evening. Her condition worsened until EMS was called, and she died at Self Regional Medical Center. An autopsy found a plastic bag in her stomach and methamphetamine in her blood, and a forensic pathologist ruled the death accidental. A lawsuit filed by a representative for Sims accuses the county, city, police and sheriff's office of negligence, and the defendants have disputed that claim.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (disputed; neglect alleged). The forensic pathologist's autopsy ruled her death an accidental methamphetamine toxicity, but a lawsuit filed by her representative says staff failed to get her medical care, not seeing a nurse until hours after she was brought in, and the defendants deny the negligence claims.

Reported by: forensic pathologist; lawsuit filed by a representative for Sims (family or their lawyers).

Lawsuit: Her representative sued Greenwood County, the city, the police department and the sheriff's office, alleging negligence in her care, and the defendants dispute that claim; no settlement or award amount has been reported.
