Toney Andrew Moore

28 years old · died January 11, 2002 · Warren Correctional Institution, Warren County, North Carolina

Toney Andrew Moore, 28, was a quiet, polite student who helped work his family's farm and was very close to his younger brother, his aunt said. He was the father of a son, Anthony. In January 2002 he died in his cell at Warren Correctional Institution in Warrenton, North Carolina. In the days before his death he repeatedly complained of vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite and inability to urinate and asked for a doctor, and his family says he was never seen by one. Prison staff first described the death as a suicide, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner's revised autopsy gave kidney failure as the cause, which his family and their attorney dispute, saying medical neglect caused his death.

Cause of death, as reported: Died from neglect by staff (disputed). The medical examiner's revised autopsy ruled kidney failure, while his family and their attorney say medical neglect caused his death after he repeatedly asked for a doctor and was not seen.

Reported by: Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) (medical examiner or coroner); Warren Correctional Institution staff (the agency that held him); Toney Moore's family and their attorney (family or their lawyers).
