Tom Smith
Tom Smith, a Black man, was being taken to the Woodville jail in Texas on June 24, 1892, under the guard of ten deputies, according to a Galveston dispatch reprinted in the Richmond Dispatch. Near Spargis, masked and armed men demanded his release and ordered the deputies back at gunpoint. A volley of gunfire then killed him and two other men who were being taken to the jail. The dispatch's account is the only source describing the death, and the deputies' response beyond stepping back is not described.
