Tom Moss
Calvin McDowell, a Black man, was held in the Shelby County jail in Memphis, Tennessee, with two other Black men, Tom Moss and Will Stuart. Early on March 9, 1892, about seventy-five masked men entered the jail, bound the night watchman and took the cell keys, then took the three men out. According to the Richmond Dispatch, the men were led to an open field near Wolf River and shot, and their bodies were found there at daylight. A Fort Worth Gazette report said the jailer was upstairs and, by that account, slept through the taking of the men.
