Tom Lillard

died June 28, 1892 · Woodbury jail, Cannon County, Tennessee

Tom Lilliard, a Black man, was held in the Woodbury jail in Tennessee in June 1892, and the newspapers spell his name differently. According to a news dispatch, a mob came to the jail at night, and the jailer gave up the keys without resistance. The mob took him to a bridge over Stone River and hanged him, and the dispatch said his neck was broken and that he died without a struggle. The accounts give the date of his death as either June 24 or June 28, 1892, and they do not agree on which.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A Murfreesboro special dispatch reprinted in the Richmond Dispatch says a mob took him from the Woodbury jail after the jailer gave up the keys and hanged him from a bridge over Stone River.
