Tom Jackson
Tom Jackson, a 25-year-old Black man, was held in the Greenbrier County Jail in Lewisburg, West Virginia, on December 10, 1931. The Daily Alaska Empire and other accounts say an organized mob of about sixty men came in automobiles, took him and another man from the jail, and hanged them from a telephone or telegraph pole. One report says the jailer's keys were taken and the men were not allowed to dress before they were killed, and the reports say volleys of shots were fired into their bodies. The Washington Times reported that investigators were pursuing prosecution of the alleged lynchers as of December 14, 1931. The accounts do not agree on his age, and they do not say whether jail staff resisted or handed the men over.
